These marchers were protesting against plans for a 'rebel' cricket tour of South Africa sponsored by South African Breweries in 1982. A squad of 15 England players, captained by Graham Gooch, were paid up to £50,000 each to defy the Test and County Cricket Board's ban on playing against South Africa. The tour was a commercial failure and the players were suspended from international cricket for three years on their return.
